The Chiropractic profession internationally is estimated to be made up of a majority of male practitioners with only around 20% of Chiropractors being female which is contrary to the percentage of people who seek Chiropractic care, typically estimated to be about 60% female.

According to the latest Chiropractic Association of South Africa statistics, 59% of Chiropractors in South Africa are female!

Gender does not affect a Chiropractor’s ability to look after people, but it can be a deciding factor when it comes to selecting who you would like to guide you on your health and well-being journey.

There are some common misconceptions about female Chiropractors which we are going to explore below.

Strength

Of course, a certain amount of physical strength is required for certain techniques, however it is the skill of the movement that determines its effectiveness, rather than the force or strength with which it is performed. There are over 200 recognised techniques within the Chiropractic profession and females are not prevented from learning and excelling at any of them.

I’m Too Big For A Female Chiropractor

It takes a lot of education and training to know exactly how the joints are aligned in each area of the body; that’s why it takes Chiropractors 6 years of education to get a Masters Degree. Once you understand the intricacies of human anatomy and how to leverage body weight properly, adjustments can be done on ANY body. It isn’t about size or strength, it is about understanding the way joints work and working with the body, not against it.

Female Chiropractors Only See Women

The standard of education does not differ if you are a male or a female, everyone training to be a Chiropractor is taught how to care for both males and females of all ages. Some Chiropractors do however do post graduate training to better able them to assist with problems unique to women, including pregnancy and post-partum care.

Why choose a female Chiropractor?

The choice of a female Chiropractor is entirely down to personal preference. Sometimes women feel more comfortable under the care of a female Chiropractor or may feel more at ease discussing their medical history with another female. At Peak Chiropractic Centre we respect your personal choice should you prefer a female Chiropractor.
