From the moment we are born, we begin to age. Often we associate aging with a decline in health, both physical and mental. But aging doesn’t have to mean decline.

Ageing has little to do with time

Imagine looking at twins at the age of 60 where one has been smoking, drinking and eating fast food all their lives and the other has eaten well, moved every day and done a practice of meditation.

Would their faces look the same? Would their bodies function the same way? Would their posture be the same? Would their outlook on life and their excitement about the future be the same?

Both of these people are the same chronological age, but they have very different biological ages. Their lifestyle choices have created the difference here, not time.

These lifestyle changes are often perceived as boring or too much hard work or that you have to sacrifice performance to achieve longevity. Who wants to put in the effort to be the healthiest corpse in the grave?

Reversing the effects of the ageing process

Now take the twin that drinks, smokes and eats poor food and imagine they do a big lifestyle change. They start Chiropractic care, eat real food, begin moving daily and expand their headspace and heartspace.

Would they look, function and feel better a 62 than 60? Could they reverse some of the effects of the ageing process? Could they be more optimistic about the future?

How do we solve the paradox of wanting to live to a ripe old age but still enjoy the benefits of youth?

You may have heard about various life extension techniques. A large amount of research is ongoing about whether certain pharmaceuticals or supplements can help improve your longevity. What’s interesting is that any of these ‘life extension’ or ‘anti-ageing’ strategies being developed all rest on a foundation of improving HEALTH first (Chiropractic Care + Lifestyle) – and there is no drug, lotion or potion that does that.

You may also have been led to believe that your genes determine your longevity, but the truth is genetics account for very little of your life expectancy. The “diseases of aging” we most fear are not simply a function of age, rather a by-product of the way we have lived our lives. The study of epigenetics looks at our lifestyle choices – behaviours, attitudes and environment – and how they influence our genetic expression.

Longevity can be defined as the average life span expected under ideal conditions, but what are those ideal conditions?

While It’s difficult to say what the exact ideal conditions are for any specific person, there are some basics that do apply to everyone:

  1. Sleep
  2. Daily movement
  3. Eat real food
  4. Be the balance you seek
  5. Get adjusted

Looking at creating health from an inside-out perspective can make it easier to achieve both longevity and performance.
