We innately fear it. Society shuns it. Yet, it is one of the things the masters of all forms embrace and seek out. This month, we’re talking about failure and the gift it brings.
Firstly, let’s orientate ourselves to the idea of failure. You did something that didn’t work. That’s one definition of failure. I’d like to posit a more useful way of thinking about it.
Failure is when you tried something that didn’t work AND you stopped trying. When we embrace the idea that we are trying things that might not work then we can be sure we’re in the zone of growth and not comfort. Comfort is the enemy of growth.
Whether you are trying a new workout, a parenting strategy, a project at work or learning a new instrument, putting yourself in the position to not succeed the first time or even the 50th time means you get to pause, reflect on the attempt, learn and then – restart.
Restarting is an amazing gift we all get the chance to do. Businesses can do it. Relationships can do it. Exercise or eating plans can do it. In many of these, you might not be starting from scratch and you may carry baggage from previous attempts but that gives you wisdom and perspective.
Too often we get caught up in the lie that successful people do things right all the time. The idols we see on TV, hear on podcasts or read about seem untouchable. The truth is that anyone who seems to have any degree of success has had many setbacks. The reason you’re still reading about them is that, they restarted.
This year gives you the chance to restart not just a new year, but also a new decade. This year you get the chance to pause and reflect. To collect the wisdom of previous decades and embark on a new 10-year cycle.
It is said that we overestimate what we can do in a day and vastly underestimate what we can do in a year, let alone a decade. Imagine what your life could be like if you took small, daily steps consistently for the next year? Imagine the power of doing small, consistent things for the next 10 years?
Save more. Eat less. Move more. Say “I love you” more. Do less screen time. There are so many small changes, that if done consistently will change your life. This is not a call to make a resolution that you never stick with. This is a call to do something wiser, more meaningful and more graceful.
Imagine living your bigger life because of the power of compound interest in doing the small things just a little better? It’s never too late to restart.
