In this, the information age, there are so many different opinions and ideas on what is best for people that it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Every second person seems to have the miracle practice or procedure to protect us from illness. What we’ve been focusing on is a discussion on becoming an “inhospitable host”. This means having a body that is so healthy that invaders won’t get a foothold. To illustrate the point, I’ve decided to draw on the wisdom of Chiropractic’s forefathers; Dr’s D. D. and B.J. Palmer.

Nervous system of the body

I desired to know why one person was ailing and his associate, eating at the same table, working in the same shop, at the same bench was not. Why? What difference was there in these two persons that caused one to have various diseases, while his partner escaped?

Daniel D. Palmer

When we try to answer D.D.’s question, it is important to look at adaptability. Every day we are exposed to a myriad of chemical, physical and emotional stressors, to which our bodies must adapt. What system is responsible for this adaptation? Could it be the one that controls all of the functions of the body?

Nerve synapse

“So what Chiropractic does, is that it simply “takes the handcuffs off Nature”, as it were. By finding the particular vertebra that had shifted and restoring it to its natural position, the adjustment thus releases the natural flow of nerve impulse. When the maze of nerves, or Nature’s communication system, supplies the body with the energy it needs for well being, you have health.”

B. J. Palmer

Your brain consists of 100 billion neurons and is connected to all parts of your body through 70km of nerve cells. You spinal cord is the information highway through which messages travel to all of your cells, tissues and organs. If access to the information is cut off, he tissue dies. Does it make sense that if part of the message is cut off or distorted by altered function of the spinal column, the functioning of your body may be affected?

“How do you make a dimmed light bright again? Remove the interference. How do you increase health in a dis-eased person? The same way!”

B. J. Palmer

A healthy nervous system is essential for a healthy life. As Chiropractors, what we strive to do is to remove interference to your health, by correcting changes to your spine that the body can’t self correct, to make you an inhospitable host.
